EU ambassadors and lawmakers on both sides of the English Channel will now pore over the "EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement," which contains 1,246 pages of text. EU envoys are expected to meet on Monday to discuss the document, drawn up over nine intense months of talks.
Most importantly, the deal as it stands ensures that Britain can continue to trade in goods with the world's biggest trading bloc without tariffs or quotas after the U.K. breaks fully free of the EU. It ceased to be an official member on Jan. 31 this year and is days away from the end of an exit transition period.

China, US agree on text of phase one trade deal
Contrary to President Trump's bullish, self congratulating statements on
a new China US Trade Deal, the official China News Agency posted a more
sober worded report noting "China and the United States have agreed on
the text of a phase one
economic and trade agreement based on the principle of equality and
mutual respect".
The text includes nine chapters: the preface, intellectual property rights, technology transfer, food and agricultural products, financial services, exchange rate and transparency, trade expansion, bilateral assessment and dispute settlement, and the final terms, according to a statement issued by the Chinese side Friday night.
Both sides have reached consensus that the U.S. side will fulfill its commitments to phase out its additional tariffs on Chinese products, so as to achieve a switch from hiking to cutting additional tariffs.
"The Chinese side believes that China and the United States, the world's two largest economies, must deal with bilateral economic and trade relations with the big picture in mind. Reaching the agreement will serve the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries and the world, and is expected to bring positive influences on areas including economy, trade, investment and the financial market.
The agreement is generally in line with the main direction of China's deepening reform and opening up as well as the internal needs for advancing the high-quality economic development".

EU signs landmark trade deal with Vietnam
The European Union
has signed a landmark free-trade deal with Vietnam, the first of its
kind with a developing country in Asia, paving the way for tariff cuts
on almost all goods.
The EU has described the deal as “the most ambitious free trade deal ever concluded with a developing country”
The free trade agreement will eventually eliminate 99% of tariffs, with some items cut over a 10-year period and other goods, notably agricultural products, limited by quotas. It is also expected to open up the public procurement and services markets, such as for the postal, banking and maritime sectors.
The deal still needs the approval of the European parliament, which is by no means a certainty given some lawmakers’ concerns over Vietnam’s human rights record.
.
The agreement was signed in Hanoi, three-and-a-half years after trade negotiations ended in December 2015.

Canada - Mexico - USA: Trump hails ‘historic’ trade deal with Canada and Mexico - by David Lynch
President Trump on Monday hailed the major revisions he was able to
extract from Canada and Mexico to the 25-year-old North American trade
agreement, as business executives, labor leaders, and lawmakers began
poring over details.
“Throughout the campaign I promised to renegotiate NAFTA and today we
have kept that promise,” Trump said at a Rose Garden news conference.
Calling the deal “truly historic,” Trump pledged: “It will transform North America back into a manufacturing powerhouse.”
The White House, as well as leaders from Canada and Mexico, announced they had inked the deal late Sunday after Canada’s 11th hour agreement. But congressional approval is uncertain, particularly if Democrats retake control of the House in the November midterm elections.
Note EU-Digest: the BS continues, as not much is changed re: old NAFTA deal.

EU Trade agreement with Mexico: EU and Mexico fail to conclude political agreement on trade deal – by Iana Dreyer
European trade officials had been more optimistic about the prospects
for a deal with Mexico than with the South American bloc Mercosur, talks
towards which ended in a limbo in early December.
But European Commission hopes to announce a ‘political agreement’ with Mexico by year-end were nonetheless dashed.
The issues that required ironing out over the last days included market access in agriculture, agreement over a few geographical indications on cheeses (such as Manchego) and the EU’s investment court system.
EU trade chief Cecilia Malmström said today: “We are confident we can solve all the remaining political issues. But we need a little bit more time.”

EU and Japan finalize trade deal
The EU and Japan finalised negotiations on a free trade agreement on
Friday (8 December), the bloc's executive announced. The accord builds
on the political agreement reached by the two sides over the summer.
However, the deal does not cover investment protection yet, as
negotiations on dispute resolution continue. The deal creates an
economic zone of 30 percent of the world's GDP, according to the EU
commission.

Trade Agreement: US and China announce deal aimed at reducing trade gap
Beijing and Washington on Friday unveiled a trade deal aimed at
reducing the US trade deficit with China, as the Kushner family’s real
estate company abandoned a business programme targeting Chinese
investors.
The trade deal would give US beef, natural gas and certain financial services access to China's massive market of 1.37 billion people. In exchange, the US would lift barriers to Chinese cooked chicken products.
The deal seems to be part of warming trade relations between the US and China. Despite President Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric against China throughout the US presidential campaign, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping launched a 100-day action plan on economic cooperation last month.
